Thanks to Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), Sofia Votino - a student in the BA in Video Design - took part in the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games as an Assistant Camera Operator and Backup Camera Operator.
“The most exciting aspect of working at the Olympics is the fact that everything is broadcast live worldwide. There’s no ‘second take’: you either get the shot or you lose it. That adrenaline is unique.”
Can you tell us about your role and what a typical day looks like?
I work as an Assistant Camera Operator and Backup Camera Operator. The day is quite simple: I arrive early, handle the technical setup, go through intense hours during competitions or rehearsals, and then take care of the dismantling.
How has what you learned in the Video Design course at IED helped you in this role?
It gave me a method. Beyond the technical skills, I learned problem solving: unexpected situations happen all the time here, and being able to react quickly makes all the difference.
How important is teamwork?
Fundamental. The operator and I need to move in sync. It requires complete trust.
If you had to describe this experience in one word, what would it be?
Intense
What does it mean to work in such an international and multicultural environment?
It’s stimulating. You see how crews from all over the world work, compare different methods, and learn a lot just by observing.
