Irene Fonseca del Río, alumni of the 2025/26 Specialisation Course in Architectural Lighting Design at IED Kunsthal Bilbao, has taken part in a new edition of Lights in Alingsås, one of the leading international events in the field of lighting design.
From 25 September to 3 October, Irene took part in the workshop preceding the festival, working alongside students and professionals from different countries to create and produce a full-scale lighting installation. The 2026 edition, held under the theme Stories of Love, used this concept as the starting point for the different installations.
Her team worked on a courtyard surrounded by four façades, using the windows as a metaphor for people and exploring how the encounter between two individuals can transform the space around them. The process involved testing luminaires, working with different colour temperatures, adjusting their positions and resolving technical issues related to installation, connections and fixings.
The experience provided a particularly hands-on approach to learning, with design decisions tested directly through space and light. As Irene explains in the interview published by Lightecture, “Until you test it, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Irene’s participation marks the fourth consecutive year of the collaboration between Lightecture and IED Kunsthal Bilbao, enabling students from the Specialisation Course in Architectural Lighting Design to broaden their training in an international setting and through direct contact with professionals in the field.
The installations developed during the workshop form part of the Lights in Alingsås 2026 route, open to the public in the Swedish city until 1 November.
