Lucas Muñoz (IED Madrid) presents his work at the 19th Venice Biennale, which this year revolves around the theme “Intelligens: Natural. Artificial. Collective.”
On May 10th, the grand opening of the 19th Venice Bienal International Architecture Exhibition took place, where Spain presented “Internalities: Architectures for Territorial Equilibrium”, a project curated by architects Roi Salgueiro and Manuel Bouza, aiming to highlight solutions to the climate crisis.
This project, selected through an open call, aligns with the overall theme of this Biennale: “Intelligens: Natural. Artificial. Collective”. In Spain’s case, the exhibition is organized into five thematic axes: Materials, Energy, Crafts, Waste, and Emissions, featuring research on specific territories and resources of the Spanish geography carried out by five teams of local architects and photographers.
Lucas Muñoz was responsible for researching the Waste theme. Together with photographer Ana Amado, he explored strategies for recovery, recirculation, and reuse of discarded materials in construction, using the metropolitan area of Madrid as a case study.
The designer studied Product Design and completed a Master’s in Exhibition Design and Management at IED Madrid. He was awarded the IED Next 30 Design Awards in the Product Design category by the school.
For this occasion, the designer presented a work consisting of a classical portico built from leftover waste materials from the renovation of a restaurant in Tetuán. As the designer himself stated on his social media: “Better to have a waste item protected and preserved as ornament within our constructions than devalued, thrown into the sea, or burned.”
