We explore the future of design as the interaction among plural forms of intelligences, with a Public Program and the journal Notes on Plural Intelligences.
IED reveals Plural Intelligences, the theme dedicated to the 60th anniversary of its foundation, which will take place in 2026. This announcement comes through two initiatives: a Public Program in the countries of the network—Italy, Spain, and at the cultural hub Casa IED in New York—and the launch of the journal Notes on Plural Intelligences.
“The theme Plural Intelligences investigates design as a plural relational practice and outlines the IED manifesto that guides the reflections introduced with our 60th anniversary. Through a Public Program in the cities where IED campuses are located and the launch of the journal Notes on Plural Intelligences, we engage and raise awareness within our large international community—composed of alumni, faculty, students, institutions, companies, and academic partners—on how design can contribute to improving the planet through listening to and embracing the contributions of a plurality of voices working in collaboration rather than opposition,” says Riccardo Balbo, IED Group Academic Director.
The editorial project explores the theme of plural intelligences across five issues, each featuring interviews and contributions that reflect on ways of thinking, acting, and relating in the contemporary world. The concept of intelligence is examined from different perspectives that give the title to each issue—Together Apart, Now-Here-Land, Future Memories, Material World, and Never Not Learning—delving into how it manifests through relationships, materials, memory, places, and learning processes.
