A project to develop biotextiles for the catering sector

An investigation on the negative impact of the food and textile industries on the planet is the starting point for this project, which proposes to advance the development of biotextiles towards more sustainable production models.

In collaboration with a restaurant in Barcelona, the student focuses on the transformation of organic food products and packaging for the development and exploration of these biotextiles as an alternative to synthetic textiles, thanks to their unique properties in terms of texture, weight, handling, water resistance, etc. In this way, they conceive the use of these new materials for uniforms, tablecloths and accessories (such as tote bags for takeaways) within the restaurant.

Yet, “You are what you waste” goes further by designing a platform through a business model based on the circular economy, which serves as a meeting point for textile designers and researchers with the catering industry.
