Over the past decade, the number of international co-productions in the audiovisual sector has grown exponentially. Within the European context in particular, international co-production has become a central tool for securing financial resources and producing films, documentaries, and television series capable of competing in the global market.

Today, co-productions represent not only an opportunity to expand the cultural reach and international circulation of audiovisual projects, but also an essential financing mechanism. Across the European Union, a wide range of instruments support the development of international co-productions, including bilateral and multilateral treaties between countries, dedicated national funds, European funding programs, and cultural institutions.

Alongside these mechanisms, international festivals, markets, and cultural initiatives play an increasingly important role, fostering encounters between producers, creators, and investors, and encouraging creative exchange and the development of new production partnerships.

Enrolling in the Master’s Program in International Co-Production and Film Financing in Milan offers significant advantages from both an academic and professional perspective. Milan is now one of the leading cultural and creative hubs in Italy and Europe, providing an ideal environment for direct engagement with the contemporary audiovisual industry.

Milan offers privileged access to festivals, markets, producers, international production companies, and broadcasters, and is strategically connected to major European film centers such as Berlin, Paris, London, Madrid, and Rome. This positioning makes the Master a unique observatory on the dynamics of the international audiovisual market.

The Master is designed for those who wish to gain in-depth knowledge of the development, production, financing, and commercialization of high-quality films and television series, adopting a truly international perspective.

In a context characterized by content overproduction and increasing competition for financial resources, international co-productions are playing an ever more decisive role in the success of European audiovisual projects. Building and managing these collaborations requires the ability to navigate complex and constantly evolving environments, calling for advanced strategic, financial, and legal skills that are increasingly in demand across the industry.

The program examines the international film and audiovisual industry, with a particular focus on Europe, while also addressing the structural transformations driven by technological innovation, digital platforms, and artificial intelligence all of which are reshaping production, creative, and distribution models.

Co-productions between entities from different countries are already a fundamental tool for the realization of audiovisual projects and will become an increasingly necessary strategy for producers seeking access to international markets and cross-border financing opportunities.

The Master's Program in international Co-Production and Film Financing aims to train highly qualified professionals for the international audiovisual market, capable of operating across film and television production, international co-production, financing structures, legal frameworks, and distribution strategies.

The curriculum combines: lectures, seminars, guest lectures with industry professionals, analysis of real-world case studies, workshops and exercises, and internships. This structure promotes hands-on learning and direct engagement with current market practices.

A core objective of the Master is to clarify the economic, financial, and legal framework of international co-production, with an in-depth focus on financing models for films, TV series, and documentaries.

The program addresses, among others, the following areas:

  • Editorial development of films and television series
  • The audiovisual production process, from development to distribution
  • Financing models for mainstream films and TV series
  • Production and co-production models in independent cinema
  • Documentary financing and international co-production
  • Relationships between producers, authors, and creators
  • Audiovisual distribution and the role of sales agents
  • The impact of new technologies and digital platforms on the audiovisual market

Throughout the Master, students will work extensively on the development and financing plan of an original audiovisual project, or on the adaptation of an existing intellectual property (IP) for the international market.

This project-based approach enables students to identify and enhance the narrative, production, and financial strengths of their work, while designing realistic and market-oriented financing strategies.

Upon completion of the Master’s Program, graduates will have acquired the skills necessary to pursue a variety of professional roles within the audiovisual industry, including: Creative Producer; International Co-Production Specialist (independent or within production companies); Film Funding Specialist across different stages of the value chain; Sales Agent; Film and Television Distribution Expert.

Career opportunities include employment within film and television production companies; Broadcasters; Streaming platforms: International distribution companies; Sales agencies; public funds and cultural institutions.
