A project that explores artefacts that function as fragments of a future beyond the current frameworks of capitalism

HYPER FUTURES. DESIGNING BEYOND CAPITALISM is a one-day event at which participants will share their thoughts and present the results (prototypes of artefacts) from the exploratory workshop developed jointly by students on the Master’s in Digital Product Design and the Master’s in Textile Design and New Materials.

During the working sessions, design has been used as a tool for envisioning futures beyond the current frameworks of capitalism: imagining how social, technological, economic and cultural systems might be transformed, all of which has resulted in the creation of artefacts.

Thus, these artefacts function as fragments of the future: partial materialisations that allow us to visualise how certain values, behaviours or infrastructures might manifest themselves in other social contexts.

The event will begin at 6.30pm with a workshop on future materialisation, led by Stef Silva (founder and Creative Director of Invisible and IED Madrid Alumni) alongside Raquel Buj (Creative Director and founder of Buj Studio and Programme Leader of the Master’s in Textile Design and New Materials) and Atahualpa Badillo (Head of Strategic Design & Foresight and Programme Leader of the Master’s in Digital Product Design).

At 7.30pm, there will be a discussion between the project’s tutors and students, during which they will share their experiences of the workshop and discuss the questions this process has raised, how they have devised solutions, and how all of this has taken shape in the artefacts.

At 8.00pm, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition led by the students from each working group, who created each of the artefacts.

This will be followed by a dj set by Umami.

The exhibition will remain open until 22 May
