Film distribution, communication and marketing roles are becoming increasingly central within the contemporary film and audiovisual industry.
Alongside traditional release strategies, new targeted and data-driven actions now play a decisive role in determining a film or series’ success in terms of audience reach, visibility and cultural impact.
Attending a Master’s Program in Film Distribution, Communication and Marketing in Milan offers a strong professional advantage. Milan is Italy’s leading city for communication, marketing and creative industries. The high concentration of advertising, branding and event agencies across sectors such as fashion, design and visual arts provides a unique environment for cross-industry inspiration and collaboration, particularly valuable for cinema and TV series promotion.
The presence of major national and international broadcasters, media companies and OTT platforms makes Milan a strategic entry point for first professional opportunities. Today, Milan stands as a key cultural and creative hub in Italy and Europe, offering easy access to festivals, producers, production companies and international markets, while being well connected to major European film capitals such as Berlin, Paris, London, Madrid and Rome.
The one-year Master’s Program combines modular classroom-based teaching with a professional internship or final project, developed under the guidance of faculty members and industry partners.
Starting with an analysis of the most in-demand professional roles in today’s audiovisual market, the program is structured around the following core areas:
Audiovisual Distribution Chain
An overview of the audiovisual distribution pipeline, exploring release strategies and communication approaches across cinema, television and new media, highlighting differences in timing, audiences and positioning.
Editorial & Creative Area
This module examines the role of distribution in creative decision-making, focusing on the relationship between distributors, producers and authors. Students analyse screenplays and audiovisual projects in relation to their target markets, comparing theatrical, television and platform-based distribution models, editorial strategies, audience engagement and content positioning.
Business & Legal Area
Students gain essential legal and economic expertise by analysing the chain of cinematic and audiovisual rights beyond the initial theatrical release. Topics include copyright and authors’ rights, national and international rights management, revenue sharing, investment models and the business structures behind distributors, broadcasters and OTT platforms.
Communication & Marketing Area
This area explores marketing and communication strategies for cinema and audiovisual content, with a specific focus on theatrical releases and their differences from TV and digital platforms.
The module covers the evolution of film marketing, the role of social media, specialised creative agencies, talent-driven promotion and the integration of traditional and digital media in release campaigns.
Commercial Area
Focused on the sale and long-term exploitation of audiovisual works, this module analyses audience trends, market dynamics and the multiple distribution windows available to films, documentaries and TV series across cinema, television, OTT platforms and new media.
Final Project
In collaboration with the Master’s industry partners, participants will develop a distribution and communication strategy for a film or TV series, designed for a multi-platform release across cinema, television, OTT services and digital media.
Upon completion of the Master’s Program, graduates will be equipped to pursue careers such as: Distribution Assistant, Release Strategy Manager, Booking & Release Manager, Sales & Acquisition Assistant, Film & Audiovisual Marketing Coordinator, Digital Marketing Manager, Social Media Strategist for Film & TV, Press Officer.
Graduates may work within film distribution companies, media companies, TV broadcasters, OTT platforms, film festivals, cultural institutions and film commissions, or operate as independent consultants and freelance professionals in audiovisual distribution and communication.
