Every film is the result of a creative process that brings together diverse individuals and professional expertise. From the initial idea to the finished product, a wide array of skills and roles are essential to bring a film to life.

The Master’s Program in Screewriting, Film Directing and Production is designed to prepare professionals to face the challenges of a constantly evolving film industry. This programme combines theory and practice to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in film production and beyond. The course covers both the creative aspects of ideation and storytelling and a deep understanding of the technical and organisational processes involved in producing and distributing cinematic or television works.

Over the two-year film studies master’s programme, students will gain advanced, up-to-date skills under the guidance of faculty members who hold prominent roles within the film industry. They will also benefit from engagement with television broadcasters, film studios, and production companies—an increasingly strategic sector in Milan, now home to major production houses. This interaction provides students with the opportunity to develop a professional network that will form the foundation of their artistic and professional careers in film production and management.

Information to decide

The Master’s Program in Screenwriting, Film Directing and Production, organised in partnership with Indiana Production, offers two specializations: Screenwriting and Film Directing and Film Production. While the two tracks share several core courses, they allow students to focus on their chosen area of expertise from the outset. While the two tracks share several core courses, they allow students to focus on their chosen area of expertise from the outset.

Whether students are aiming to become a creative producer, line producer, or director, this programme provides the knowledge and practical experience to achieve their goals.

Core courses shared by both tracks include disciplines in history, visual language analysis, sociology, and anthropology, helping students develop critical thinking skills and a personal creative vision. These classes equip students to identify originality in ideas and recognise what makes a film marketable to the industry and appealing to diverse audiences. Topics such as film marketing, film contracts, and audience engagement are explored in depth, preparing students to address the business and creative sides of filmmaking.

In addition to theoretical learning, the film master degree includes hands-on workshops from the first year. A significant portion of the curriculum focuses on practical projects, particularly in the second year, where students will specialise in their chosen track.

SPECIALISATION IN SCREENWRITING AND FILM DIRECTING

This track is ideal for students passionate about storytelling and crafting compelling narratives. The programme covers every stage of the creative process, from developing the initial idea to writing the story outline, treatment, and screenplay. Students will gain expertise in directing, sound design, and editing, with a focus on the artistic and technical aspects of filmmaking.

Students will also experiment with cutting-edge technologies, enabling them to acquire advanced technical skills. By the end of this filmmaking master’s degree, students will have written and directed a short film as their final project. The project is produced in collaboration with students specialising in film production, simulating the real-world dynamics of the film industry.

By the end of the program, graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce as freelancers or collaborators with production companies in the film and television broadcasters. Those focusing on directing can start as assistant directors, while aspiring writers can build careers in screenwriting for films, television, or streaming platforms.

SPECIALISATION IN FILM PRODUCTION

The film production specialisation focuses on the entire lifecycle of film production, including organisational, creative, financial, and distribution aspects. Students will learn to oversee the creative process as a creative producer while also mastering the economic, legal, and logistical elements of production. Key topics include film crowdfunding, intellectual property rights, and working with co-producers, distributors, and exhibitors.

Students will develop skills essential for roles such as line producer, location manager for film, or production manager. They will also gain experience in cinema management, distribution, and film marketing, positioning themselves as leaders in the film industry.

The final project involves producing the short films created by students in the Screenwriting and Film Directing specialisation, providing hands-on experience in film production and management.

Upon graduation, students will be prepared to work in roles across production companies or as consultants for film contracts, funding, and financing. Career opportunities also include roles in distribution, talent agencies, and organisations running festivals and industry showcases.

The Master’s Program in Screenwriting, Film Directing and Production is tailored for postgraduates with a variety of academic backgrounds:

  • For those with a background in cinema studies: The program deepens and refines skills acquired in undergraduate programmes, making it an ideal next step for those with a degree in film studies or cinematography
  • For those from audiovisual fieldsStudents with broader experience in audiovisual disciplines will apply their previous knowledge to focus specifically on film production through hands-on projects such as films or television series.
  • For those from related disciplines: This course offers students the opportunity to specialise by applying their existing knowledge to careers in the film industry.

Whether students are interested in how to become a film producer, cinema management, or advancing as a line producer, the Master’s Program in Screenwriting, Film Directing and Production equips them with the tools they need for a successful career.
