The Bachelor of Arts in Video Design at IED Milano enables students to design and produce audiovisual content that combines art, communication and technology. The programme develops technical and creative abilities to work independently or in teams, covering all stages of video production: from writing to cinematography, through to post-production. Milan offers numerous opportunities in advertising, communication and fashion, thanks to the strong presence of production companies and businesses requiring audiovisual content to promote activities and products. Alongside this, the artistic and museum sectors increasingly demand video installations and interactive projects. The city is also a major theatre hub, fostering connections and influences between video design and the performing arts.
The IED programme spans three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical expertise and innovative tools.
First Year: Focused on acquiring the basic tools for audiovisual design, from camera use and shooting techniques to project conception and writing, through to video editing with software such as Adobe Premiere. Cultural subjects include contemporary art history, film and audiovisual theory and analysis, semiotics and cultural anthropology.
Second Year: Dedicated to design and teamwork. Participants produce different types of video, from documentaries to short films, as well as more experimental and performative formats. Software such as DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, TouchDesigner, Blender, AI tools and programming for installation projects are introduced. In parallel, the historical, contemporary and sociological evolution of video is analysed.
Third Year: Structured into two simultaneous paths: one focuses on linear storytelling for the production of a short film and a commercial, while the other explores interactive and multimedia installations, developed in collaboration with Media Design and Sound Design students, involving sensors, interactivity software and projection technologies.
The thesis, individual or collective, requires learners to choose one of the languages explored – fiction, documentary, music video, video art or installation – and develop a complete project, from concept to production through to finalisation.
