The course in Graphic Design focuses on training visual communication experts
This professional figure works on complex “communication systems” through different media, having knowledge of advanced editing software, professional printing and production methods.

The contexts students operate in are graphic design studios, which are progressively expanding in different fields: product design, communication, fashion, photography, but also corporate communication and design areas, publishing companies, web, advertising agencies and TV production. 

Title – This BA is recognised by Italian Ministry of Education Research (MIUR) as an Academic Diploma Level I and awards 180 credits.

Get an insight into the creative professions: Graphic Designer

Context - Graphic design is everywhere, in printed and digital applications of our everyday life.

Methodology and structure – A strong laboratory overtone is the feature of the course: from basic design theories to high-level professional simulation, students progressively develop complex research projects through guided design labs in collaboration with real companies.

In parallel with the design laboratory classes, our students acquire historical, sociological, economical and technical skills. 
These techniques are useful to help them on interpreting and decoding the language of visual communication, of contemporary arts, cinema and all the society communication needs.
Our students acquire immediately the basic tools of Graphic Design: knowledge on Typefaces' usage, page formats and layouts, genesis meaning and perception of shapes and colors. The study plan also focuses on technical tools: from basic softwares on Photo editing, picture management and vector graphics to advanced ones dedicated to web design, 2D and 3D animation, video editing and TV graphic.

The final part of the course covers topics of increasing complexity where our students acquire autonomy on managing timings and schedules from the project’s concept to its completion.
The last and most significant step in our educational process is the choice and development of a Thesis Project, a complex and articulated theme carried out in collaboration with real companies to research creative and innovative design and communication solutions.

Giuseppe Liuzzo - Course Coordinator

Giuseppe Liuzzo - Course Coordinator
He began his professional career working with many Design and Communication agencies, accomplishing national and international projects of Brand Identity and Brand Communication. In 2010 he creates "Liuzzo's Factory", one of the most eclectic and active Italian collective, famous for its icon BOB. In 2011 he founded his own studio in Milan, where he collaborates with national and international agencies and companies, developing projects of Brand Identity, Corporate Communications and Strategic.  

Annbjer Daniel

Annbjer Daniel
Swedish Graphic Design & Art Director, he now works for various design and advertising agencies developing Branding, Corporate Identity, Illustration, Campaign and Strategic thinking in both ATL and BTL projects with National & International Clients. In 2010, he set his first solo exhibition in the Tortona 20 gallery displaying illustrations and graphic works. He then founded the creative platform and indie brand FVSD as well as the art collective Pastel Castles in 2013.

Carlo Branzaglia

Carlo Branzaglia
He’s involved in design and innovation. He teaches at Academy of Fine Arts, Bologna, where he established the Graphic Design and Design Management programs, and at the Design Center. Author of several books and editor in chief in quarterly graphic design magazine Artlab; he is President of Adi, Emilia Romagna Delegation.

Paula Andrea Callejas

Paula Andrea Callejas
Industrial Designer. Master in Design from Domus Academy. She has worked within the Domus Academy Research Center and collaborated with other studios in Milan such as Italform, Francesca Valan, Future Concept Lab, participating in different research projects and approaching different design fields: C.M.F. and trends, environmental design, playing concepts and toys. Since 2002, she has been heading the project 100%natural - monitor, dedicated to design, materials, jewelry, trends and crafts.

Francesco Casolo

Francesco Casolo
He has been writing for cinema for many years, among his most successful works and collaborations: I resilienti, documentary film awarded at Lampedusa film festival and selected at the Beirut International Film Festival and Cutting the grey parts, Golden Leopard at Locarno Film Festival. He works as Editor and Ghost Writer for RCS-Rizzoli Media Group and magazines.

Bettina Di Virgilio

Bettina Di Virgilio
She has been working as Designer for over than 10 years, with her own studio based in Milano. Her projects won several prizes of interaction and product design. In 2004, she was selected to be part of the Adobe Guru, with specialisation on Photoshop. Adobe Certified Instructor and part of the Adobe Community Professional, she's Author of six handbooks about Photoshop. Lecturer of Computer Graphics at Istituto Europeo di Design since 2006.  

Andrea Gelpi

Andrea Gelpi
He got a Ph.D. in Sociology of Communication from Catholic University Milan. Worked as Teaching Assistant in the subject of intercultural communication and history of the radio and television. Worked as a free-lance Qualitative Researcher for several university research institutes on the subject of media, technology and communication. Currently working as a Director of qualitative research in market research.   

Romano Gianni

Romano Gianni
Art Critic and Art Teacher since the late Eighties. He curated art exhibitions and teaching seminars in Europe. His most popular book is Contemporanee, Costa&Nolan 1999, an important survey on the work of women artists since the Seventies. In 1955, he founded one of the first art websites, postmedia.net, which later turned into a publishing company with the name of postmedia books.

Raffaele Solaini

Raffaele Solaini
He received the Ph.D. in Semiotics from the University of Bologna, under the guide of Umberto Eco. He started teaching at the University of Pavia and since 2006 he teaches Semiotics, Rhetoric and Branding at the European Institute of Design. Former columnist for the online paper Affaritaliani.it, he commented on communication phenomena and social trends. He worked with the most important market research agencies. Among his major clients, Ace, Scavolini, Mercedes, Telecom Italia, Enel, Italian Premiership.

Stefano Temporin

Stefano Temporin
Graduated in Communication, he worked at Leftloft Studio for 3 years, where he participated in designing the typeface for Corriere della Sera and San Siro Stadium. He has been working at IED since 2007, now he’s also Art Director for the publishing house Edizioni Zero.

Graziano Vitale

Graziano Vitale
Adobe Certified Expert and Adobe Certified Instructor. Graphic Designer, he works for advertising and publishing art. He also works as Author and Illustrator for children's book, Graphic Designer for advertising, publishing art, web and mobile applications, and has been teaching at IED since 2005.

Marina Bonanni

Marina Bonanni
Graphic Designer working in the field of communication and publishing as Art Director and freelance for more than 25 years. She works for various companies caring of the image, corporate identity, advertising and graphic design. In 2005, she began to cooperate in the coordination of the IED Graphic Design course in English taking care of the students as a tutor and following the educational aspects. French mother tongue, she speaks and writes perfect English and Spanish. She is an AIAP’s member.

Public official for 4 years, school manager for 6, editorial coordinator for nearly 20. Freelancer and freethinker, always.

Visual Designer and Illustrator based in Milan. Creative Director at RITARITA fashion house. Lecturer at Politecnico di Milano Fashion Design Dept. Consultant and Art Director for several publishing houses, industrial and educational. BA in Visual Communication at Birmingham Insitute of Art and Design, MA in Communication Design at Politecnico di Milano.

Dea Curic

Dea Curic
She’s a versatile and prolific Artist: Textile Designer, Writer and Art Director of cap74024 – magazine for fashion, art and Eros. She collaborates as a freelance for different brands: Dolce&Gabbana, Trussardi, MaxMara, Rare, CondèNast Italia. She has been living in Milan since 2005, in 2008 graduated at IED in Graphic Design, then specialising at Bauer in Type design. She currently teaches digital printing at IED.  

Federica Venuto

Federica Venuto
Born in Turin in 1987, she created his first website in 2001. Graduated in Interaction Design at IED in 2014, she’s currently freelancing. She founded a web agency based in Luxembourg. She is also working to create a StartUp based on the project presented as thesis for IED.

Luca Scarlini

Luca Scarlini
Writer, Essayist, Performance Artist. Teacher at Holden School, IED and Venice University. He worked with many theatres and dance companies, included Societas Raffaello Sanzio, Fanny & Alexander, Motus. He is the voice of the radio program Museo Nazionale, Radio 3 Rome and wrote many books about art, loss, thefts and history among which Il Caravaggio rubato, Siviero contro Hitler, Vita di un’opera d’arte: La Marchesa Casati and Ziggy Stardust: la vera natura dei sogni.

Giulia Tacchini

Giulia Tacchini
Master Degree in Product Design and a passion for food design. She wrote for Essen a Taste Magazine, Leifoodie and Dispensa and worked as Food Stylist and Food Event planner. She’s currently dealing with food taboos, food anthropology and entomophagy, the practice of eating insects. Cofounder of Entonote’s project.

Paolo Proserpio

Paolo Proserpio
After studying for three years at Architecture Academy in Switzerland, in 2002 he got a degree in Graphic Design at IED Milano. Since then he has been working as Graphic Designer with Versace and other clients ranging from corporate identity, web design, packaging to record sleeves. He has been shooting for music magazines, the photo-agency Retna (New York) and Mtv.it for 10 years.

Luca Toccaceli

Luca Toccaceli
Degree in Philosophy from the Università degli Studi di Milano. Apart from IED he is currently teaching communication and music event planning at Università Cattolica of Milan, IES Abroad Italy, Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca. He’s been Music Advisor for commercials, Tv programs, movies and documentary films, video productions; as music publisher he also acts as promoter, press agent and manager for the artists he represents in Italy.

Davide Colla

Davide Colla
Designer, he started his career in a communication agency based in Frankfurt. During this experience, he won the prestigious IF Design Award in the Digital communication Section. In 2013 he founded a digital branding called 150UP, a small studio which works for customers like Barilla, Pirelli and RedBull and develops in house APP as “The First Calendar”.

Matteo Discardi

The desire to teach and tell arts and crafts led him to collaborate with some prominent magazines as Applicando and Macitynet and then with Mondadori Informatica, for which he wrote more than 25 books. Testimonial and Collaborator of brands such as Microsoft, Aquafadas, Paperlit, Quark, Wacom and Parallels. 

Lorenzo Banal

Lorenzo Banal
Graduated in Design and Interior Architecture at Politecnico di Milano, he started his career as Motion Designer at MTV Italy in 2004. Art Director at MTV Italy in 2007 and then Creative Director for MTV South Europe & Nickelodeon South Europe & Comedy Central Italy. His team at MTV is in charge of developing projects for 13 channels in 7 countries, from Channel Identities to Show Packages, as well as all the promotional assets needed to support the Channels on air communication.

Matteo Bollati

Matteo Bollati
He began his career as Junior Designer in 2003 at Studio Iacchetti + Ragni. After getting a degree in Indutrial Design, he worked in Carlo Contin design studio as Product Designer. In 2010 he became a freelance. He’s currently Senior Designer and Team Manager at PS +. During all these years he has been collaborating with many Italian and international design companies such as Kartell, Foscarini, Zucchetti, Laufen, etc.

Alessandro Lucchini

Alessandro Lucchini
Freelance Video Maker, Editor and Motion Graphics Artist who collaborates with production companies around Europe, mostly focused on the production of documentaries, taking care of various parts of the post-production process, from editing to visual effects. He also creates digital video content for interactive installations and environments for museums or exhibitions. He studied in IED Milano.

Cecilia Melli

Cecilia Melli
Independent Art Director and Graphic Designer specialised in creation and management of brand identities. She works for brands, magazines and designers, as well as by advertising and design agencies. In 2012, she enhanced her expertise with post degree courses in business strategy.  Her work ranges from niche projects developed for small businesses, to large-scale branding projects for industry leaders as Moleskine, Tezenis, Vodafone, RCS, Missoni, and Maserati.  

Alba Solaro

Alba Solaro
She started her career as Journalist in 1981, writing for L'Unità and indipendent publications. In 2000, she became Senior Editor of the website KwMusica, as part of Kataweb portal. She took actively part in the process of rethinking and redesigning the new Marie Claire. Other journalistic collaborations include among others Il Mattino di Napoli and Io Donna. She has also worked for television and radio as Editor and Author.

Tiziana Gemin

Tiziana Gemin
New media Art Critic and Curator. Graduated in Digital Design at IED Milano. Her final thesis was realised in collaboration with the interaction design studio Limiteazero, with which she had been collaborating for several years. She writes articles concerning new technologies and digital culture in general. Moreover, she curates and organizes exhibitions and events related to new media art and interaction design.
