The Bachelor of Arts in Product Design at IED Milano places responsible innovation and social, environmental and economic sustainability at the core of product design. Projects are developed from defined briefs – often in collaboration with companies – or from unexplored design scenarios, extending to product systems capable of interacting with each other and with the surrounding environment. To foster shared design languages and transversal skills, the programme encourages interaction with other disciplinessuch as Fashion Design, Media Design and Sound Design – in line with transformations in the contemporary professional context.

The aim is to train professionals able to design in a context where technology, sustainability and rapid change define the field of action. It is conceived as an innovation laboratory, where diverse design methodologies are tested, the dual nature of product design – tangible and intangible – is explored, and future challenges are addressed with technological tools, creative ideas and critical thinking.

Course structure and contents:

First Year: Dedicated to acquiring fundamental design tools: freehand and digital technical drawing with Rhinoceros, 3D modelling, material knowledge, construction techniques for models, and communication software such as the Adobe Suite. Theoretical courses cover cultural subjects (art and design history) and operational topics (finishes, colour, marketing), combining research, coherence and technical execution.

Second Year: Introduces collaboration with clients, self-production and start-up ideation. Students work with companies, tackling professional briefs, designing innovative products and deepening advanced modelling and rendering tools (Rhinoceros, V-Ray). Socio-economic and historical disciplines enrich the programme, fostering a critical vision of contemporary design and greater awareness of user needs.

Third Year: Students consolidate design autonomy, choosing to focus their research on product design or innovation and service design. Photorealistic visual representation techniques are refined with software such as Blender, while students build a professional portfolio for entry into the job market.

The thesis project, developed individually or in groups – including interdisciplinary teams – represents the synthesis of acquired skills, simulating a real professional experience and preparing students for a conscious career in design.
