The Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design at IED Milano focuses on the strategic design of spaces, where user experience and brand identity become defining elements of research. The analysis of relationships between individuals, communities and environments is used to create spaces capable of effectively communicating brand values and precisely meeting user needs. In Milan, the design scope extends from interior design to interior architecture, from installations to events, with constant attention to the evolution of contemporary spatial languages.
The IED programme spans three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills and innovative tools.
First Year: Introductory to space design. Students study freehand and digital technical drawing with AutoCAD, materials, construction techniques and graphic software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, alongside art and design history.
Second Year: Focuses on retail spaces and temporary experiences linked to brand values, based on real briefs developed in collaboration with companies. Skills are expanded through the use of 3D modelling and rendering software such as Rhinoceros and V-Ray, alongside advanced techniques, materials and bespoke design. The study of contemporary architecture and socio-economic dynamics helps students develop a personal design language, addressing relationships between spatial elements and stakeholders.
Third Year: Enhances design autonomy, allowing students to choose different design directions between interior and exhibit design, both for annual projects and the final thesis. Representation techniques are strengthened with advanced software (3ds Max, Corona Render, Twinmotion), while analytical skills are refined through cultural subjects such as anthropology and phenomenology of the arts. A dedicated portfolio course prepares students for the professional world. The thesis project, developed individually or in groups – including interdisciplinary teams – originates from briefs proposed by students or external clients such as companies or institutions.
The final work, simulating a real professional situation, includes research, design, technical drawings, scale models and a book documenting all phases of the process, demonstrating a mature, autonomous and conscious design vision.
"I think the IED years have been fundamental for what I'm doing now. One thing that really helped is the fact that we've always worked with the design brands or brands in general for our projects."
