The city as a typographic archive: in the module dedicated to Typographic Languages, students of the Master in Graphic Design at IED Roma explored the urban landscape to narrate it through its signage, lettering, and typeforms.

Guided by Type Designer Alessio D’Ellena, each student selected an area of Rome or its surroundings to conduct a visual and analytical investigation into the typographic forms found in the urban fabric. The focus extended beyond letters and fonts to include context, materials, historical layers, and the visual relationships between typography and space.

The final goal was to translate this research into an editorial product: an A5 leporello (accordion book), designed to visually present the typographic mapping of the chosen area.
This exercise encouraged students to consider typography as a cultural and environmental language, and design as a tool for critical observation.
