The Bachelor of Arts in Interactive Media Design at IED Cagliari trains professionals capable of designing, developing and managing audiovisual and digital content for different media and platforms. The programme combines creativity, technology and critical thinking, intertwining research, experimentation and design practice. Over the three years of study, students learn to use emerging technologies, consolidate their artistic and design identity, and refine their ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.

Course structure and contents:

The IED programme is structured over three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills and the use of innovative tools.

First Year: Provides an introductory path that helps students understand the theoretical and practical foundations of design and multimedia communication, learning the principles of visual communication and the basics of graphics. Students use graphic software (Photoshop, Illustrator), video editing tools (Premiere Pro) and multimedia design applications. Courses include contemporary art history, film and audiovisual theory and analysis, art semiotics, theory of perception and Gestalt psychology, which provide a cultural foundation for interpreting and designing multimedia content with awareness.

Second Year: Consolidates acquired technical and methodological skills, specialising in areas such as motion and game design, visual storytelling and interactivity. Advanced software such as Cinema 4D, Blender and Figma are introduced for motion graphics, 3D and design. Students work on creating content for web and social media, videos and video games, and developing immersive experiences (AR/VR). Artificial intelligence tools are introduced for automating certain phases of design and visual production. Courses include phenomenology of the arts, psychology of communication, aesthetics of new media and analysis of digital media, essential for understanding how design and multimedia content influence audiences and visual perception.

Third Year: Integrates skills in branding, transmedia storytelling and project management. Students work on complex and interdisciplinary projects, applying advanced techniques in video editing and post-production, interaction design, rapid prototyping and the development of content for virtual reality and gaming. They also focus on building a professional portfolio, refining their ability to present and showcase their work in professional contexts.

The thesis project represents the final stage of the three-year programme, where students apply all the technical, design and theoretical skills acquired. Depending on their aspirations, they may choose from different types of projects, developed individually or in groups, such as an interactive installation, an app, an audiovisual product or an immersive experience.
