Join the world of new media and discover how to develop transmedia content and interactive experiences with the three-year Undergraduate Programme in Media Design at IED Roma

With its emphasis on project-based work, from the very first year the programme will bring you into contact with peers with similar backgrounds, in particular Video Design, Sound Design and CG Animation for creating projects across multiple media, such as the release of films, TV series, videogames, brands and interactive products.

Along this path you will acquire tools and skills for project design in the areas of graphics for new media, interface design and gamification. At the same time, you will gain technical knowledge about software, programming languages and platforms.

Information to decide

The three-year Media Design programme at IED Roma is the ideal start to building a career where web and new media technology merge with visual communication. Over three years you will discover how to express your creativity through cross-media products that bring new meaning to the concept of interactive experiences.

On the three-year degree programme in Media Design at IED Roma you will learn to design media content, developing and managing digital communication projects with increasing levels of sophistication, with an eye to future new media. With full awareness of the historical and cultural background required to approach the professional world, you will have the opportunity to cover such subjects as contemporary art history, cinema theory and analysis, art semiotics and contemporary arts phenomenology.

Theory disciplines will always be supported by more practical labs where you will be learning some of the most used software tools in the industry, such as Adobe Suite, Unity, Unreal Engine, C++, Max SP, Cinema 4D, Sketch, Touch Designer, ArKit, ArCore and Processing, for the creation of real and virtual prototypes.

In addition to the computer labs, you will also have an interactive stage available with sensor equipment, virtual and augmented reality and immersive cinema. Here, other than practising on a daily basis what you have learned during the lessons, you will also be able to test your personal projects.

The three-year programme in Media Design at IED Roma is for anyone with an open and dynamic personality. We like to describe our students as ‘transmedial’, not just because they can move quickly from one subject to another, from one communication mode to another, but mainly because they are interested in the consumption experience of any content through all kinds of devices.

This track is for you if you've always thought of a new way to mix art, creativity and technology to create new experiences for your audience, whether in physical or on-line environments. You will develop and improve your personal style while creating artwork, interfaces, games and digital experiences with digital storytelling based on coherence and innovation.

Becoming a Media Designer means learning to use with awareness all the tools and languages of new technologies. This will allow you to work for the web, cinema and TV, advertising, brand communication and videogames, production houses, web factories, integrated graphic studios, publishers of videogames or apps, IT companies, communication and distribution for entertainment and new media.

The three-year programme in Media Design at IED Roma is the best option for anyone who wants to combine technology and visual communication skills, working on top-level projects nationwide and internationally. The city itself is one of the reasons for choosing to take this programme here: Rome boasts a rich history, a strong tourist sector and an entertainment industry with many projects to launch films, TV series or installations in interactive museums.

This programme provides a unique opportunity to create a personal portfolio, take an active part in workshops and projects contracted by other firms, get in touch and start building a network with designers and other professionals from the same or similar industries, ready to share new ideas.

By its very nature, the Media Design programme at IED Roma is set to evolve year by year to keep up with market trends. Over the three years you will lay the groundwork for your future career, assessing a wide range of possible career opportunities
as Digital Art Director, Game Designer, Web Designer, App Designer, Social Media Specialist, Experience Designer, Graphic and Interface Designer for smartphones and tablets.
