The Bachelor of Arts in Media Design at IED Roma stands out for its strong ties with the film industry, cultural institutions, and partnerships with production and distribution companies (Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., RAI Com), as well as with museum institutions for interactive projects (Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, Cinecittà Studios, Videocittà). Collaboration with the Sound Design and Product Design courses allows exploration of multimedia installations and new forms of experience design, including within virtual and augmented reality environments. In addition to developing apps and cross-media works for companies and institutions (Enel X, Roma Capitale, Museo della Comunicazione di Roma, Parco Archeologico del Colosseo), the course integrates both generative and operational artificial intelligence into creative processes, from project pre-visualisation to the development of works, services and products using advanced tools.
The IED programme spans three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills and innovative tools.
First Year: Introduces the technical and theoretical foundations of multimedia production. Students study the principles of graphics using software such as Photoshop and Illustrator, collaborative prototyping platforms like Figma, programmes such as Game Maker and Python, alongside the basics of web design and interaction design. The laboratory-based approach is complemented by historical-critical knowledge of communication and the evolution of audiovisual languages, with particular focus on cinema, branding and digital storytelling.
Second Year: Deepens acquired languages, experimenting with social media storytelling, motion graphics, app and dynamic website creation, and the development of immersive and interactive installations. Advanced tools such as Touch Designer, Unity and Unreal Engine are introduced, alongside theoretical reflection on the evolution of new media languages and net marketing, providing tools for transmedia projects.
Third Year: Completes technical skills for the development of complex digital systems, tackling the creation of websites, apps and interactive installations, working in specialised teams and managing real production processes. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are explored in creative contexts, increasingly integrating acquired knowledge with a professional and strategic approach. The programme concludes with the thesis, a synthesis that simulates professional production and may include the creation of phygital experiences, immersive installations or integrated communication projects.
