IED is a partner of the European project of professional training aimed at the development of entrepreneurial skills and competences in young musicians who work in string quartets.

MUSA - European young MUsicians soft Skills Alliance is a European project of professional training dedicated to young string quartets. It aims at providing them with knowledge, skills and competences of entrepreneurship which are absent in their general curriculum, although fundamental for their professional career.

MUSA is aimed at young professional string quartets composed by musicians between 20 and 35 years old, who work together and focus on the classical chamber music repertoire. MUSA is co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union as Strategic Partnership to support innovation (Key Action 2).

The strategic partnership is composed by: Le Dimore del Quartetto S.r.l. Impresa Sociale as Leading Organisation, IED – Istituto Europeo di Design and ASK - Centre for Research on Management and Economics of Arts and Culture Institutions of University Bocconi in Milan (Italy), ProQuartet - Centre européen de musique de chambre from Paris and La Ferme de Villefavard en Limousin di Villefavard (France), by Experimenta from Lisbon (Portugal).

MUSA started in October 2020 and lasts for 25 months. It is composed of four main activities:

  1. Short-Term Joint Staff Training Event for trainers, teachers, experts from partner organizations in order to define a methodological framework in terms of designing common guidelines for training pathways, learning outcomes and evaluation;
  2. The systematization of the methodological framework in Guidelines replicable at European level;
  3. The pilot experimentation through:
    a) a panel of innovative high-level training pathways in the music sector in Italy, Portugal, France;
    b) a panel of transnational training activities, which takes place in strict relation with the pathways as non-formal learning in the form of artistic residence;
    c) the multiplier events at the end of the trainings and activities that help disseminating the results of the project.
  4. The final evaluation of the experimentation by the Research Center ASK of Bocconi University through a Handbook for Higher Training Programs in cultural entrepreneurship for Young Musicians and a Research on the educational and social values of European cultural heritage as economic and employment drivers.

The pilot experimentation (Intellectual Outputs) is made up of three main European phases:

  1. Milan (Italy), April 2021 | Innovative training course in the music sector in Italy: 4-Bows drive, the string Quartet image strategy and communication, in collaboration with IED - European Institute of Design.
  2. Lisbon (Portugal), October 2021 | Innovative training course in the music sector in Portugal: Cross-fertilization among the arts and in particular between music and other cultural fields, such as architecture, design, painting, to enhance their profile and career opportunities, in collaboration with Experimenta.
  3. Villefavard (France), April 2022 | Innovative training course in the music sector in France: Recording & Market Distribution on marketing, with particular reference to the registration and distribution phases on the market, National and European copyright legislation, administrative and financial aspects, in collaboration with ProQuartet and La Ferme de Villefavard en Limousin.

The journey of MUSA ends in October 2022 in the heart of Europe, Brussels, with a big event in a symbolic place of the city.

MUSA involves the participation of 11 international string quartets, selected by all the partners and hosted in residency in historic houses and other places of relevant cultural interest. The artistic residency represents a source of inspiration for the development of quartets’ identity and image.

MUSA has the final objective of enabling young musicians to improve their professional prospects, providing the organizations involved in this sector with a new training offer, strengthening the relationship between music and the cultural heritage sectors with the perspective of enhancing European culture in terms of employment and socio-economic development.
