Pencils (and paper), vehicles and action. In its fourth edition, the IED Barcelona Sketching Marathon once again delivered exactly what it promised: high levels of excitement, plenty of creativity and, above all, pure automotive design.
Organised on 14 May by the School of Design, the competition brought together around thirty students from the BA (Hons) in Transportation Design for nearly three hours. Under the guidance of their Course Coordinator, Xavier Fernández, they produced a series of sketches based on models and projections of motorcycles, boats and cars. It was the perfect opportunity to test their skills and practise the fundamentals of sketching techniques in areas such as proportions, perspective, symmetry, and the use of shadows and highlights.
An international professional jury made up of Michele Albera, Coordinator of the Transportation Design Area at IED Torino; Alessandro Riga, Senior Interior Designer; Esteban Palazzo, IED Barcelona alumnus, Director of Palazzo Design Nation and former Principal Designer at McLaren Automotive; Andreu Solá, industrial designer specialising in transport; Manuel Díaz Cru, Project Manager BU at Automobile Barcelona; and designers and alumni Julio Engelke, Marc Senán (Chief Designer at EDAG Group) and Hernan Charalambopoulos assessed the works and selected the following students as winners:
The winners will travel to the IED Torino campus in autumn, where they will compete in a new edition of the Design Sketch Battle for Ferrari.
The 4th Sketching Marathon also included a talk featuring alumni Edgard Millan, Juan Magan and Bunta Inazu, moderated by Xavier Fernández, Coordinator of the BA (Hons) in Transportation Design. In addition, the following day, designers and jury members Hernan Charalambopoulos and Esteban Palazzo delivered a conference for all students.
