A display of talent, creativity and personal style from final-year students of Interior, Product, Transportation and Business Design at IED Barcelona
How will creativity impact the world of business in the future? Where will we live, what will everyday objects be like and what kind of vehicles will we use to get around in 2065? These are some of the questions addressed by final-year students of Interior, Product, Transportation and Business Design at IED Barcelona through projects developed during their academic journey at the school, and presented on 8 and 9 January at a new edition of Portfolio Review Design.
Once again, this annual academic initiative by IED brought together— in the presence of invited companies and industry professionals —a carefully curated selection of proposals offering innovative, sustainable and strategically driven solutions, ranging from responses to current challenges to visions of possible futures. These projects—developed individually or in groups—highlight each student’s personal style as they prepare to take the leap into the professional world.
In Business Design, projects ranged from a hybrid navigation system that redefines tourist flows in overcrowded markets such as La Boquería—helping to avoid congestion with local customers and incorporating a loyalty card that rewards users with surplus food, thereby contributing to waste reduction—to a platform for buying and selling emerging art based on NFTs.
In Product Design, proposals included design-driven solutions to combat water scarcity, such as dew collection systems, smart beach showers and efficient planters that reduce water and fertiliser use; as well as a side-opening toaster designed for people with limited hand mobility. The exhibition also featured lamps, portable looms, jewellery-sculptures, tapestries and knives that combine traditional craftsmanship with the latest digital manufacturing technologies, developed in collaboration with artisans, alongside packaging proposals awarded at international events.
In Interior Design, projects ranged from an interior design proposal for a catamaran conceived to offer an exclusive luxury experience that immerses users in art from a unique setting, to the redesign of an existing retail space adapted for a new jewellery brand, offering an atmospheric journey that reflects the rarity, emotional depth and artistic identity of each piece. Another innovative project was a platform that enables AI-generated architectural visualisations and conceptual environments.
Finally, in Transportation Design, a variety of mobility solutions were showcased, addressing micro-mobility (foldable electric scooters), nautical design (with inspiration drawn from coupé car models of the 1960s and 1970s) and competitive mobility (prototypes for the legendary Le Mans race imagined for 2065, inspired by animal references or designed to be tested in virtual videogame formats), among other projects.
