The Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and Video Design at IED Roma trains filmmakers capable of working across different areas of audiovisual production, from conception to the creation of works for cinema, television, web and new media. The programme develops capabilities to work independently, in teams or within the film industry, in line with the demands of a constantly evolving sector.

Rome is the centre of the Italian film industry and offers a unique context for those wishing to specialise in audiovisual production. The city hosts film events and initiatives throughout the year, which foster a strong network of relationships with industry professionals and access to collaboration and professional growth opportunities. This cross-disciplinary orientation has led to the production of series for Universal and Prime TV's Midnight Factory channel, commercials for brands such as Red Bull and Cosmopolitan, projects for institutions such as ATAC and the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, and video editorial work for Alice nella Città within the Rome Film Festival.

Course structure and content:

The IED programme spans three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical expertise and innovative tools.

First Year: Introduces the fundamental tools of filmmaking through a laboratory-based approach, enabling participants to gain familiarity with shooting techniques, technical equipment management and short film production. Cinematography covers composition, movement and lighting; editing is explored with DaVinci Resolve, focusing on editing, colour correction and grading. Photoshop and Illustrator support the creation of graphic layouts, titles and posters. Theoretical courses include contemporary art history, film theory and analysis, Gestalt psychology and storytelling, providing the cultural foundations for scriptwriting.

Second Year: Focuses on producing audiovisual content to professional standards, experimenting with formats such as music videos, mini-documentaries, viral videos and fashion films. Cinematography concentrates on advertising photography, while video editing explores colour grading, compositing and visual effects using DaVinci Fusion. After Effects is introduced for motion graphics and Blender for 3D modelling and animation, while sound design is developed with DaVinci Fairlight. Directing is combined with actor direction, screenwriting and production dynamics. A module on AI-assisted writing is introduced, enhancing creative and narrative abilities.

Third Year: Learners define their authorial style and explore advanced techniques in cinematography, digital post-production and commercial directing. Design activities extend to brand identity, art direction, digital scenography, video mapping and VJing with software such as Arena Resolume.

The programme concludes with a thesis project, structured as a professional simulation, enabling them to develop complex products for brands, companies and institutions, such as fashion films, vidcasts, transmedia campaigns and commercials. This process allows them to build a professional portfolio suitable for entering the audiovisual, film and television sectors.
