The Bachelor of Arts in CG Animation and Game Design at IED Milano trains professionals in the design, modelling, and animation of 3D objects, characters, environments, and visual effects. The skills acquired during the course range from gaming to advertising and cinema, while also covering applications in the fields of design and fashion. The Milan course includes the development of projects such as 3D animated shorts or video games, promoting a practice-based approach and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The IED programme spans three years, integrating design practice with cultural knowledge, industry dialogue, technical expertise, and cutting-edge tools
First Year: Dedicated to acquiring the technical and design fundamentals of three-dimensional graphics through theoretical and practical lessons on software including Photoshop, Painter, 3ds Max, and Nuke. Animation is introduced using Maya. Concurrently, students study the cultural, historical, and critical foundations of cinema, video games, and art, which are essential for professional practice. Practical exercises and integration between technical disciplines enable students to create visually impactful and complex static images.
Second Year. Students work collaboratively on more complex projects, such as creating and animating a character. The first semester focuses on developing a virtual reality video game. With the introduction of new software (ZBrush, Unreal Engine) and more advanced use of previously introduced tools, students tackle all production and artistic phases of game design. The second semester focuses on humanoid character animation and the integration of hyper-realistic CG with live-action footage, using Maya, VRay, Nuke, and Houdini. Theoretical modules enrich the programme with sociology, directing, and contemporary art languages.
Third Year. Focused on refining skills and identifying the most suitable professional field for each student. Advanced techniques in rigging, animation, visual effects, and pipeline management are explored. In the first semester, in collaboration with other courses (Sound Design, Media Design, Illustration and Animation), students plan all pre-production phases of their dissertation project (screenplay or game design, concept, storyboard, production schedules). In the second semester, drawing on their accumulated experience, they develop complex projects that enhance autonomy, organisational skills, and critical awareness.
"I had an amazing professor in rigging. The passion when he explained the work to us still remains. [..] To people who want to follow a path as mine, I would say focus on one skills that you feel is your skills and do it over and over again."
