How can a piece of jewelry evolve and become a distinctive expression of identity and design?
Jewelry has always been an object rich in symbolic, cultural and social meanings. Studied by history, anthropology and design, it represents a medium through which individuals and communities express values, belonging and desires. Designing jewelry today means engaging with this heritage and reinterpreting it through contemporary techniques, materials and languages, within an increasingly international and competitive market.
The Master in Jewelry Design at IED Roma trains designers capable of developing jewelry collections that are coherent from a creative, technical and communicative perspective. The programme approaches jewelry design as a complete process, from concept development to production and market presentation, offering a comprehensive overview of the sector: from high jewelry to contemporary jewelry, and from artisanal practices to dynamics related to serial production and the luxury industry.
The educational pathway has a strong practical focus and integrates theoretical study, design experimentation and laboratory experience. Throughout the Master, students deepen their understanding of creative and design methodologies applied to jewelry, the study of materials and their behaviour, traditional and contemporary goldsmithing techniques, and the advanced use of digital tools for technical drawing, 3D modelling and rapid prototyping.
The projects developed are based on realistic case studies and briefs, allowing students to engage with the different phases of the Jewelry Designer’s professional practice. Alongside design and production aspects, the programme includes modules dedicated to communication, branding and product marketing, which are essential for building and enhancing the identity of a collection in a highly competitive market. The Master concludes with a Final Thesis Project focused on the development and communication of a jewelry collection that synthesises the educational pathway and the student’s design vision.
The Master prepares professionals ready to enter the contemporary jewelry sector with vision, methodology and awareness. Upon completion of the programme, graduates may work within jewelry companies and design studios, in the fields of high and fine jewelry, precious watchmaking, or by launching their own entrepreneurial projects, contributing to the development of collections distinguished by design quality, technical excellence and strong identity.
"Ohliguer really started here. So the challenges along the way I would feel would be my perfectionism, for sure. I had my own challenge of not putting my creations out into the world. I had a fear that they weren't good enough. So I feel the Course Coordinator was really encouraging, saying, 'Just keep creating. It’ll develop in its own natural course.'"
