Get an insight into the creative professions: Graphic Designer

The three year Graphic Design course covers traditional subjects and also makes an in-depth study of all aspects linked to Visual Culture, an interdisciplinary field of research centred on visual texts, seen as a form of  contemporary expression. Images are analysed not only as iconographic signs but as symbolic elements of the cultural system they originate from, thus becoming expressions of contemporary social reality, where visual experience is a key constant in our daily lives.

The first year covers preliminary learning providing a sound basis in cultural references and the tools and rules that distinguish and characterise project work. This includes: typography characters as a basic tool for graphic design, origin and perception of shape and colour, software for graphic production, developing images, as well as cultural knowledge that allows the student to interpret and decode the languages of visual communication from contemporary art to cinema.

The second year concentrates on methodology and guided project work. The future graphic designer  acquires awareness and skills in specific professional areas, through practical guided experience in three areas of visual communication: the sphere of expression, where signs transform and evolve to become symbols, brands, logos; the rational sphere, where stories are told through texts, images and pages, where each element has a precise role, confirmed by their graphic or typographic treatment; and finally the sphere of interactivity and motion graphics and the consequent organization of information available to the user

During the third year in the Graphic Design course time is dedicated to advanced project work and professional simulation, addressing the project areas covered by the Graphic Designer: from corporate image to product communication, from publishing graphics to interaction design and three-dimensional and television graphics, from a cross-media perspective. The thesis project is complex and structured, carried out in collaboration with companies and businesses that interact with the Istituto Europeo di Design as a means to finding original and innovative solutions.
