The Bachelor of Arts in Sound Design at IED Milano offers comprehensive training in the languages and technologies of sound, preparing professionals capable of designing and producing audio content. The programme explores recording techniques, sound synthesis, sound design for audiovisuals, video games, apps, interactive installations and multimedia performances. The Sound Design course at IED Milan stands out for its focus on sound applied to communication, events, interactivity and multimedia installations, developing transversal skills to work across creative sectors and new technologies.
First Year: Provides a preparatory approach to mastering the technical and conceptual foundations of sound design, creation and production. Students study acoustics, recording, synthesis and sound editing, using software such as Pro Tools and Logic Pro. They also learn the main techniques of mixing and production, alongside theoretical and cultural foundations related to the history of sound in the arts, cinema and music.
Second Year: Introduces topics such as sound design for installations, performances, video games and audiovisuals. Students work on complex and interactive projects, using tools such as Ableton Live, Max MSP, Arduino and Fmod. They experiment with on-set recording, studio recording, advanced sound editing and music production, while theoretical courses explore contemporary music, sociology and the performing arts. The course is enriched by an interdisciplinary approach through collaboration with Video Design and Media Design courses, particularly in the development of collective projects.
Third Year: Dedicated to advanced design and professional simulation. Students produce soundtracks and independently manage editing and audio mixing for complex audiovisual products, deepening their understanding of sound in interactive and immersive environments through installations created in synergy with other courses. They work with performance, sound branding and projects based on real briefs, developing creative, managerial and organisational skills. The curriculum is completed with the study of popular music culture, copyright law, music publishing and recording contracts.
The programme concludes with the thesis project, representing the synthesis of all acquired skills. Students may choose between an individual project (such as a sound research project, installation, performance project or podcast) or a group project, in collaboration with other courses such as Video Design, CG Animation, Illustration and Animation. The thesis covers the entire process of sound creation, from design to production to finalisation.
